要求・提案・依頼・希望などを表す場合
ask、demand、request、desire、propose、suggest、require、insist、urge、move（動議を出す）などの動詞の目的語となるthat節の中でよく用いられます。なおこの場合、主節の時制が過去であってもthat節の動詞は原形にします（時制の一致はない）。
We desire that he visit us more often.
　（私達は彼がもっと頻繁に訪ねてきてくれたらと思う）
It is requested that the papers be made ready within a few days.
　（書類は2・3日以内に用意されたい）
They proposed that the laboratory be built.
　（彼らは実験室の建設を提案した）

提案などを表す場合、イギリス英語ではしばしばshall、shouldなどの助動詞をつけ加えます。
The doctor suggested that the child (should) be sent to the hospital.
　（医者はその子を病院に送るようにと言った）
